A little reminder to all a residents about snow removal from private driveways. If you have a contractor plow your driveway and or sidewalks when it snows, make sure it is being done safely and properly.

2-    To all residents whose property abuts a sidewalk. Per Sec:20-4.1, you must maintain the sidewalk during the winter months. Snow and ice must be removed within 12hrs of daylight after the same shall fall.

3-  Snow removed from private property cannot be placed on any township street or public right of way blocking passage of pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles per section 20-4.3.

Long Hill Township has an ordinance for improperly removing snow from your property. When a contractor is plowing a driveway it is against township ordinance to push the snow off the property of the resident and it into the street. This also prohibits pushing snow from a driveway across a roadway to either another private or township owned piece of property.  This creates a hazard to motorists and pedestrians.

Anyone who is observed removing snow in this manner is subject to a warning and/or fine.

The ordinance reads as follows:

20-4.3 Placing of Snow or Ice on Public Rights-of-Way Prohibited.

No person shall throw, place or deposit any snow or ice which has accumulated upon private property into or upon any public sidewalk, handicapped parking space, bicycle route or the paved portion of any public street in the Township or into or upon any area within the right-of-way lines of any street in such a way as to hinder the passage of persons, bicycles or obstruct vision.
