The Long Hill Township Police Explorers consist of two sections. The first section, Police Explorers, includes young men and women between the ages of 14 and 21 years old. The second section, Police Cadets, includes young men and women between the ages of 12 and 13 years old. Both sections focus on Law Enforcement and Community Service Programs and provide the unique opportunity of becoming part of the daily operations of a police department.
Other important aspects of the program include learning to become a team player and developing leadership skills. Currently the Long Hill Township Police Explorer Program consists of 7 Adult Advisors, 18 Police Explorers and 11 Police Cadets. Explorers promotions are based solely on performance and leadership skills. Promotions include the ranks of Chief, Captain Lieutenant and Sergeant. All Explorers will receive Police Uniform Class “A” and “B” and associated equipment required to perform their duties. Also provided are BDU uniforms used for training and special details.
The Police Explorers and cadets attend two meetings a month, which consist of classroom and practical exercises. These training sessions include Motor Vehicle Stops, Building Searches, Hostage Negotiations, Bomb Scene Search, Motor Vehicle Accident Investigations, Crime Scene Investigations, Traffic Enforcement, Telecommunications, Emergency First Aid, Firearms and Range Training. The Police Explorers assist the Full-time Police Officers during Parades, Bike Races, and the Crime Prevention program. The Police Explorers also trained to the Long Hill Township Office of Emergency Management during times of emergencies, disasters, and training exercises.
Police Explorers also have the opportunity to attend the New Jersey Police Explorers Academy, which is conducted annually at the Monmouth University in Long Branch NJ. This week long program held during the month of July, focuses on police training and physical fitness programs as well as competition between other police explorers posts. During the 2002 Police Explorer Academy the Long Hill Township Police Explorers won the “Directors Trophy” which is presented to the best overall performing post attending the academy.
This year the Police Explorers assisted with the following community service programs: Memorial Day Parade, 2009 Dog Census, Annual Bike Race, Millington School Terrorism Presentation, Elks Cripple Children Picnic, St Joseph Shrine 911 Memorial, St Joseph Shrine Fall Festival, Elks Our House Picnic, Fire Department Wetdown, Halloween Parade Detail, Elks Hoop Shot and the Meyersville Tree Lighting Detail.
The Police Explorers obtain all their own funding through donations, fund raisers and work details. These funds are used to purchase uniforms, equipment, range, and to offset the costs of the Police Academy and the Annual Awards Dinner.
This program is highly recommended for individuals interested in pursuing Law Enforcement, Military, or Community Service Careers.
